Puerto Vallarta From a Northerners View

Updated: May 12, 2023

by: Julian Sheppard Creative - a Photographers Perspective

From the moment I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, I knew I was in for an adventure. As a northerner from Canada's freezing Yukon, I'm used to the cold and the snow, but here in this tropical paradise called Puerto Vallarta, the air was warm and the ocean breeze carried the sweet scent of saltwater and palm trees. I've always been drawn to new experiences and cultures, and Puerto Vallarta did not disappoint. As I explored this beautiful city, I couldn't help but feel like I was discovering a whole new world. From the vibrant colors of the buildings to the bustling energy of the streets, Puerto Vallarta had a charm and personality all its own. In this post, I'll share my perspective as a Canadian Northerner and my experiences in this incredible city, from the beaches and the food to the people and the culture.

Now, a little bit about me and my travelling history - Growing up in northern Canada, I always felt a strong connection to my Filipino roots, even though I didn't have many opportunities to explore them. My mom immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, and while we visited her home country a few times when I was a kid, we never had the means to travel extensively. Instead, I spent most of my childhood in the chilly Canadian north, dreaming of exotic destinations and tropical paradises. So when the opportunity arose to visit Puerto Vallarta, I knew I had to seize it. It would be my first time experiencing a truly tropical location, and I couldn't wait to immerse myself in a new culture and environment.

To my surprise, despite being on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean, Mexican and Filipino cultures share some striking similarities. Both cultures place a strong emphasis on family and community, with large, extended families often living together or in close proximity. Respect for elders is also a cornerstone of both cultures, and hospitality and generosity are highly valued. Additionally, both cultures have a deep appreciation for music, dance, and other forms of artistic expression, with vibrant festivals and celebrations taking place throughout the year. And of course, both countries are known for their delicious cuisine, which often features bold flavors and a fusion of different influences.

The hills and jungles surrounding Puerto Vallarta are a sight to behold. The lush greenery and rolling hills create a serene and tranquil atmosphere that is hard to resist. It's easy to lose yourself in the natural beauty of this region, whether you're hiking through the mountains, exploring the jungle canopy, or just admiring the stunning views from a distance. The wildlife is also a highlight, with colorful birds adding to the magical ambiance. The hills and jungles of Puerto Vallarta are a true oasis and a must-see for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature.

Yelapa y Majahuitas

These two places were one of the most fascinating places I've ever visited. These two small towns are tucked away in the lush jungles of Puerto Vallarta and offer a glimpse into traditional Mexican village life. The towns are only accessible by boat, which makes the journey to get there an adventure in itself. Once we arrived, we were greeted by friendly locals who welcomed us with open arms. We explored the towns and their stunning beaches, and were amazed by the natural beauty and tranquility of the area. The colorful houses and narrow streets gave Yelapa y Majahuitas a unique charm, and we enjoyed learning about the local culture and traditions. Overall, Yelapa y Majahuitas was a highlight of our trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Photographers Standpoint

Puerto Vallarta is a dream destination. The city is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, from the azure waters of Banderas Bay to the lush jungles that encircle the town. There are endless opportunities to capture beautiful images, whether it's the vibrant colors of the local markets or the sunsets that paint the sky in shades of pink and orange. The city's architecture is also a photographer's paradise, with colonial-era buildings and ornate churches providing plenty of visual interest. One of my favorite photography experiences was wandering the cobblestone streets of the old town, where every turn revealed a new photo opportunity. Whether you're a professional photographer or just looking to capture some amazing vacation memories, Puerto Vallarta is the perfect place to explore and experiment with your camera.

I feel grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience new things, and I hope that my blog has inspired others to do the same. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a newbie, Puerto Vallarta is a destination that should be on everyone's bucket list. I look forward to my next adventure and can't wait to see what the world has in store for me.
